A Lovely You – Makeup Tips for Every Woman

How Often Should you Clean your Makeup Bag?

Posted on: August 24, 2011

Our cosmetics come in contact with germ-prone areas on a daily basis, and they aren’t meant to last forever! Use the following tips to determine the shelf life of your makeup the next time you need to clean out your makeup bag.

  • Concealers and powders, even lip balms, will likely last up to two years because they don’t contain water. If anything looks funky though, toss it.
  • 3-in-1 products are prone to contamination more quickly than products designed just for one area of the face, so toss these after six months.
  • Liquid foundation can last up to a year. To avoid exposing the makeup to germs, always use a makeup sponge or foundation brush to apply product instead of your fingers.
  • Pencils, such as eye or lip liner, can last for several years if you’re careful. Never wet the tip with saliva or water, and always sharpen before each use to maintain its shelf life.
  • Mascara needs to be tossed every three months, otherwise you risk some pretty nasty eye infections.
  • Lipstick can last anywhere from 1 to 2 years or even up to 4 years. Storing it in the fridge can help extend its shelf life, too! Just remember; if it smells rancid, throw it out.

Are you as good about cleaning your makeup bag as you should be? Don’t be shy, tell me in the comments.  As always, stay lovely!
