A Lovely You – Makeup Tips for Every Woman

How to Pick the Right Blush

Posted on: August 30, 2011

When choosing the perfect blush, you definitely need to consider your skin type. Different formulations work on certain skin types differently than they do on others, and you want to make sure you’re choosing one that will work for your specific skin type. With that in mind, I’ve created a basic list of some of the most common blush formulations to help you pick the one that’s right for you.

Powder

Arguably the most common type of blush, powder blush can be used on nearly every skin type. However, those with oily skin can definitely benefit from powder blush as it won’t exacerbate the problem. Additionally, because of it’s denseness powder blush tends to last a lot longer than other formulations. One to try: CoverGirl TruBlend Blush, $6.47, drugstores.

Gel

Gel blush, also called cheek stains, are great for oily and combination skin. While they impart a sheer wash of color to cheeks, they tend to dry very quickly so you need to blend immediately to avoid streaking. If you have exceptionally dry skin, you’ll likely want to steer clear of gel blush because it will be difficult to blend into skin before it dries. One to try: Tarte Cheek Stain, $30, Sephora.

Cream

For ladies with dry skin, cream blush is a gift from the Heavens! It blends in well with fingers and offers great color while allowing your natural glow to shine through. Make sure to apply cream blush with your fingers and blend, blend, blend the color in for a natural looking flush. One to try: NARS Cream Blush, $27, Sephora.

Shimmer

Also called highlighters, shimmer blush can accentuate cheekbones and add a subtle, light reflecting gleam. These types of blushers are perfect for evening wear, but aging women should avoid using them in spots that are highly wrinkled (you’ll just draw more attention to that area!) Otherwise, these are great for all skin types. One to try: Stila All Over Shimmer Duo, $22, Stila.com)

Which blush type do you prefer using? Do you have a particular brand you swear by? Don’t  be shy, tell me about it in the comments and as always stay lovely!
