A Lovely You – Makeup Tips for Every Woman

How to Find the Perfect Foundation

Posted on: September 19, 2011

Finding the right foundation can seem like an impossible task. Not only do you have to wade through countless formulations and brands, but you need to find a shade that works for your skin tone too. Keep reading for my advice on how you can find the perfect foundation with just a little effort.

1. What level of coverage do you want?

Before you can pick a foundation, you need to know what level of coverage you desire. There are a variety of formulations you can choose from, all with varying levels of coverage based on your needs. A tinted moisturizer, for example, will provide a very light hint of color to help even your skin tone while a liquid foundation will give heavier coverage. Alternatively, power or mineral foundations can often be customized to your desired level of coverage by the amount of product you use.

2. What is your skin type?

You need to know your skin type to be able to pick the perfect foundation for your needs. Do you have dry skin? Look for a foundation that includes built-in moisturizers to help hydrate. For sensitive skin, look for foundation specifically targeted towards that skin type. For oily skin, find a product that says “oil-free” or “oil control.” For combination skin, cream to powder foundations work best. Lastly, mineral foundations can work for all skin types but are especially great for those who react negatively to other foundations.

3. Test it out

Once you’ve determined the level of coverage you want and your skin type, it’s time to begin testing products to find your perfect match. Select a few colors that seem closest to your natural skin tone; apply a stroke of each color on your cheek. The one that seems to disappear into your skin is the shade you want. If you are at a drugstore and can’t test the shades, take a few bottles and hold them up to your neck in natural light (i.e., by a window or doorway.) You may have to try several shades before you find your match, but you will find one!

Once you’ve found your perfect shade, you’ll know it. Foundation should blend seamlessly with your skin, allowing you to achieve complexion perfection without looking like you’re wearing a caked on mask of makeup.
