It’s that time of year again, ladies – the Zoya Earth Day Promotion! If you aren’t familiar with how this works, here are the basics:

  • It’s a “polish exchange,” which means you can exchange your old non-Zoya polish for bottles of shiny NEW polish. However, you don’t have to send any polish back – but it’s an Earth Day promo, so why wouldn’t you?
  • You must order at least 6 bottles but no more than 24
  • Each polish is 50% off – so you play $4/per bottle, plus shipping
  • Use code “EARTHZOYA2012” beginning April 21 and ending April 22 at 11:59 EST

You can read the rest of the fine print here. If you don’t have a Zoya account but want to see what this Big5FREE Polish is all about, you can create an account by clicking here. If you use my referral link, you’ll receive a free bottle of Zoya polish when you create an account.

Are you as excited about this Earth Day promotion as I am?

Earth Day is April 22, and to reaffirm their commitment to organic ingredients, Avalon Organics wants consumers to know how important it is to “go green.”

As part of their commitment to a natural beauty routine, the company announced its transition to NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for personal care products containing organic ingredients. Because the USDA has yet to create specific requirements a product must meet in order to make organic claims on the label, the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard requires all products that claim they contain organic ingredients on the  label to contain at least 70% organic content.

Says Emma Froelich-Shea, senior vice president, marketing and R&D of Hain Celestial Personal Care:

Creating just one efficacious, cosmetically elegant formula that meets the NSF/ANSI 305 standard is a daunting task in itself, so reformulating the entire line was an enormous accomplishment. The transition was three years in the making, but we’re committed to meeting the standards and the expectations of our consumers, no matter what. This Earth Day, we want to reaffirm our commitment to the future of organic personal care and our core values of integrity, efficacy, purity and safety.

If you’re interested in going green for Earth Day and beyond, make sure to look for the NSF Contains Organic Ingredients seal on your favorite beauty and personal care products. This will help you differentiate between a product that’s truly organic and one that only claims to be!

Earth Day is just around the corner (April 22, to be exact) so I thought I’d compile a list of my favorite eco-friendly beauty must-have’s that are perfect for this special day.

What are your Earth Day beauty must-have recommendations?

LUSH Cosmetics, in collaboration with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Humane Society International (HSI) have launched the largest-ever global campaign to end animal testing for cosmetics. 48 countries are participating in the campaign, and it will also launch in over 700 Lush stores worldwide.

Says Kate Willett, director of regulatory toxicology, risk assessment and alternatives for The HSUS:

The beauty industry continues needless animal testing and it’s time for it to stop. Consumers are largely unaware that some shampoos and lipsticks still involve chemical poisoning of animals such as rabbits and mice. Science has moved us beyond this and there is no place for cosmetic testing on animals in modern society.

Cosmetic animal testing has already been banned in Europe, and a ban on the sale of newly animal tested cosmetics in other parts of the world should go into effect sometime next year. Consumers who feel strongly about cosmetic animal testing may also lend their voice in support of this campaign by signing petitions at their local Lush store or online at http://www.humanesociety.org/becrueltyfree and  www.fightinganimaltesting.com/na.

I think this is a huge move in the fight against cosmetic animal testing, and will definitely be signing the petition to eradicate this scientifically unreliable method of testing the safety of cosmetics. Will you be lending your voice to the campaign?

On the hunt for vegan eyeshadow? You’re in luck! I’ve managed to track down several companies that offer what you seek – so why not give them a try?

1. 100% Pure Cosmetics Vegan Eyeshadow

All of 100% Pure Cosmetics products are natural and vegan, which means you can feel good about using their products. For eyeshadow, they sell a variety of colors in their powdered shadow line, as well as  a slightly smaller satin shadow line, which are basically cream-type shadows. All of their shadows are made using fruit and vegetable pigments – neat!

They also have such inventive names, like “Girl Fight” (pictured above.) LOVE!

While the priciest on this list, these vegan shadows from Gourmet Body Treats seem to be very popular among those who use them. While I haven’t personally tried these, I am in love with the shade selections – and the fact they can be used wet or dry depending on how intense you’d like your look.

A new disposable razor from Schick – the Xtreme3 Eco – is the first disposable razor that uses 100% recycled materials in its handle, as well as 100% post-consumer paper in its packaging. Current estimates by the company say that they will be saving 103,000 pounds of plastic material and 15,500 pounds of paper of paper from ending up in landfills annually.

Says Suma Nagaraj, brand manager for Schick Xtreme3:

We know consumers are doing their part to live more sustainably, and we wanted to provide a simple way for them to do so with their shave. At Schick, we’re taking proactive steps to minimize the impact of our products and manufacturing processes on the environment, and we’re continually looking for ways to improve—creating this product was the next step in our journey.

Shick wanted to have a more immediate impact on the environment while they designed this razor. With that in mind, they turned to common household items – like hangers, buckets and pails – and turned those into the handle of the Xtreme 3. National distribution will start in April, but the razors are currently available at Walmart.
