How to Fake a Flawless Face
Posted August 23, 2011
on:Unless you are one of the lucky few who wake up with a naturally glowing complexion, most of us have to use whatever products we have at our disposal to fake it. Unfortunately, we don’t always get it right. The following steps are part of my tried-and-true method to faking a flawless face.
Before you can show your radiant complexion to the world, you need to set the stage. Use a gentle, non-abrasive scrub to remove dry, flaky skin and dead patches; apply moisturizer immediately following. After allowing the moisturizer to sink into skin, I like to then apply a foundation primer which helps smooth and even out skin tone while giving your makeup a good base to adhere to. I’m a huge fan of Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer ($36,sephora.com)

After prepping your face, choose your favorite foundation and apply a thin, even coat over your entire face using a makeup sponge or foundation brush. Take care to avoid piling products on; you want a smooth, even finish – too much product will cake and settle into fine lines. A tinted moisturizer can be used instead if you aren’t a fan of foundation. Once the foundation has set, apply concealer to problem areas, such as under the eyes, on red spots or to cover blemishes.
Using a large powder brush, sweep a loose setting powder over entire face, taking care not to use too much. (One to try: Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder, $34, sephora.com) A setting powder not only helps makeup adhere to your skin, but adds a “finished” look by diminishing the appearance of fine lines and other skin problems. Once you’ve set your makeup, finish your look by applying your favorite blush or bronzer, and voila!
We aren’t all lucky enough to be born with flawless complexions, but with a few essential products and a little patience, you can fake it beautifully for a look that you’ll love to show off to the world. Do you have any tips I neglected to mention here? Don’t be shy; leave them in the comments – and as always, stay lovely!
